  1. 1. If you were an African American who went to the Southern United States for Kansas in 1879 and 1880, you were considered an Exoduster.

    3. W.R. Hill, a white man, and W.H. Smith, a black reverend, told of the "Nicodemus Town Company." Explaining a so-called "Promised Land" (Nicodemus) in Kansas to black families. Telling how it would have wild horses that were to be tarned, the chance to own land, and "wild game."
    4. Most of the Nicodemus settlers came from the South, because troops were withdrawn and they were not safe for sure.
    5. Pap led about 300 African Americans to Kansas.

    1. a. An Exuduster is the name given to the African American people who left the south as soon as reconstruction was over and the military left to live in Kansas.

    b. The name exuduster originates from the word exoduses, which means a group of people leaving a dangerous place to find or go to a safe place.

    2. The town Nicodemus in Kansas was named after a legendary slave who brought to America on a slave ship and later bought his freedom.

    3. W.R. Hill and W.H. Smith where the founders of the town and they played the role of real estate agents and advertisers.

    An exoduster was a name given to African Americans who fled the southern United States for Kansas in 1879 &1880. Exodus meant a group of people leaving for their safety and thats what the blacks were doing.

    Nicodemus, KS got its name from a man named Nicodemus who was a lengendary slave but later brought his freedom.

    3. What roles did W.R. Hill and W.H. Smith play in the founding of Nicodemus?
    In 1877, a white man named W.R. Hill, a land develper from Indiana, and Reverend W.H. Smith, a black man, formed the Nicodemus Town Company.They described a "Promise land" in Kansas to black families.
